When everything looks fine… but you don't feel fine

I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to look at someone’s life from the outside and think, “They seem to have it all together.” And sometimes we can even look at our own lives in exactly the same way.
Everything might be fine — work, relationships, home, family, day-to-day life — and yet something inside us just doesn’t feel quite right.
There may not be one obvious reason. You might not even be able to explain what’s wrong. You just know you don’t feel quite like yourself.
Sometimes nothing is obviously wrong.
Your life might look perfectly fine from the outside.
... You have a home. People who love you. Work. Friends. A reasonably comfortable life.
And yet something doesn't feel right.... You might even feel guilty for feeling that way.
“I have so much to be grateful for. Why am I unhappy?”
I think we can sometimes dismiss this feeling because we believe we should be grateful, happy or satisfied with what we have. But these quieter feelings are worth listening to too.
So in this newsletter, I wanted to explore what it might mean when everything looks fine on the outside, but something inside you is asking for attention.
Sometimes that feeling isn't a problem to fix. Sometimes it’s a gentle invitation to listen a little more closely to yourself.

You don't need a crisis to deserve change
I think we sometimes believe we need a dramatic reason to make changes in our lives.
A relationship has to be terrible.
A job has to become unbearable.
We have to completely fall apart.
But sometimes change begins much more quietly. A sense that the life you've created no longer quite fits the person you've become. And that can be difficult to explain. You might start to notice:
With a feeling.
A restlessness.
A longing.
You may simply have changed
One of the realities of being human is that we don't stay the same person.
Our values change, our priorities change, our relationships change, our bodies change, our understanding of ourselves changes. And sometimes the life that once felt perfect was exactly right for an earlier version of you.
That doesn't mean it was wrong, it simply means you may be ready for something different now.
So what do you do?
You don't necessarily need to blow everything up, instead, start getting curious and ask yourself:
What feels missing?
What am I longing for?
What parts of my life feel alive?
Where am I going through the motions?
What have I stopped allowing myself to want?
These questions can be surprisingly revealing and sometimes what we need isn't a completely different life but simply to .
...bring more of ourselves into the life we already have. And sometimes we discover that something really does need to change.
Either way, awareness is a powerful place to begin.
This is much of what I love about counselling — creating a space where you don't have to justify how you feel. You can simply be curious about it.
If something inside you has been quietly asking for attention, I'm currently taking new counselling clients.
With warmth,
Adria
